How to Remove an Image Background with AI and Get a Transparent PNG

On the Lunart canvas, select an image and click Remove background. A new version of the image with a transparent background appears right next to the original, and downloading it gives you a PNG. If you have not created the image yet, you can skip this step entirely by generating it with a transparent background from the start.

For an existing image: Remove background

  1. Drag the image onto the canvas or upload it from your device. Images already on the canvas work too.
  2. Select the image and click Remove background in the toolbar.
  3. Choose the model, quality and resolution (1K, 2K or 4K). The credit cost is shown before you confirm.
  4. Confirm. The transparent version is placed beside the original, which stays unchanged.
  5. Select the new image and click Download to save the transparent PNG.

Background removal runs on GPT Image 2.5 Flare or Sunburst, the models that support transparent output. The image is regenerated rather than cut out, so very fine details may change slightly. For most product shots, portraits and logos the difference is hard to spot.

For a new image: generate with a transparent background

For stickers, logos, icons and product assets, you do not need to generate first and remove the background second:

A product bottle generated straight onto a transparent background

  1. In the composer, switch to Image and choose GPT Image 2.5 Flare or Sunburst.
  2. Turn on Transparent background.
  3. Describe a single subject, for example "an orange corgi sticker, centered, clean outline".

The result is already a transparent PNG, which saves the credits of a separate removal step. More options for this model are in the GPT Image 2.5 guide.

Which resolution to choose

Where the image will be used Suggested resolution
Websites, social posts, presentations 1K
Product pages, ad creatives, poster elements 2K
Print, or assets you will scale up later 4K

Subjects with complex edges, such as hair, fur or thin branches, come out cleaner at higher resolution and quality.

Tips for a clean cutout

  • Start from the sharpest source you have. A blurry or heavily compressed photo gives the model less to work with at the edges. If the source is small, run Upscale on it first.
  • One clear subject works best. When a photo contains several objects and you only want one, crop it on the canvas first, or use Split layers and keep only that layer.
  • Check the result at full size. Zoom in on the canvas to look at hair, fur and thin parts before downloading. If an edge is off, run it again at a higher quality, or touch up that spot with Omni Edit.

After the background is gone

  • Put it on white. Marketplaces like Amazon ask for a white background on the main product image. Use Export canvas, choose PNG and check Use white background.
  • Place it in a new scene. Add the transparent subject as a reference image and type @ to use it in a prompt: "put the product in @Reference 1 on a marble countertop, soft morning light".
  • Change the background but keep the original pixels. Instead of regenerating the subject, use Omni Edit on the original: draw a box around the background and write "replace with a plain white background".

Remove background or Split layers?

Remove background Split layers
What you get One subject on a transparent background Separate layers for people, products, text and background
Is the subject regenerated? Yes; fine details may change slightly No; layers are separated from the original
Best for A quick transparent asset Editing elements one by one, or a layered PSD

For a single clean cutout, Remove background is the fastest route. To pull a poster apart into editable pieces, follow how to split an image into layers and export a PSD.

Open Lunart, drop an image onto the canvas and click Remove background to try it.

FAQ

Does removing a background cost credits?

Yes. The new image is generated with GPT Image 2.5, so the cost depends on the quality and resolution you pick. The total is shown before you confirm.

Is the downloaded file really transparent?

Yes. Download the new image and you get a PNG with a transparent background, ready for slides, ads or a product page.

Will the subject look exactly like the original?

Very close, but the image is regenerated, so fine details can shift slightly. If you need the subject pixel-for-pixel, use Split layers and take the subject's layer instead.

Can I get a white background instead?

Yes. Use Export canvas, choose PNG and check Use white background.
